Sub-Zero Ice Maker Not Working? Common Causes & What to Do

March 18, 2025

Ice maker problems are one of the most common Sub-Zero service calls we receive. The system has several components that can fail independently, so accurate diagnosis is important before replacing parts.

Check the Water Supply First

Before anything else, confirm the water supply line to your Sub-Zero is fully open and has adequate pressure. A kinked line behind the unit or a partially closed shutoff valve is often the culprit — and costs nothing to fix.

Ice Maker Arm or Sensor

Most Sub-Zero ice makers have a harvest arm or electronic sensor that stops ice production when the bin is full. If this arm is stuck in the "up" position, or the sensor is faulty, the ice maker will stop making ice even when the bin is empty. Manually lower the arm and see if production resumes.

Clogged Water Filter

Sub-Zero recommends replacing the water filter every 12 months. A heavily clogged filter restricts water flow to the ice maker, resulting in small, hollow, or no ice cubes. Replacing the filter is a simple task — check your owner's manual for the correct filter model for your unit.

Low Freezer Temperature

The ice maker needs the freezer at 0°F or below to produce ice properly. If your freezer is running warmer than this, ice production will slow or stop. Check your temperature setting and verify the freezer is actually reaching the set point — if not, you may have a separate cooling issue.

Failed Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve opens to allow water into the ice maker mold. When it fails electrically or mechanically, no water reaches the mold. You may hear a buzzing sound when the ice maker tries to fill but nothing happens — a classic sign of a failed inlet valve that needs replacement.

Ice Maker Module Failure

The ice maker module controls the entire harvest cycle — when to release ice, when to fill with water, and when to pause. When this module fails, the ice maker may stop completely or produce ice very slowly. A technician will test the module and replace it with a genuine Sub-Zero OEM part if needed.

When to Call for Service

If checking the water supply, filter, and arm position doesn't restore ice production, it's time to call a certified Sub-Zero technician. Our team serves Arlington, Crystal City, Fort Myer, Potomac Yard, Rosslyn, Ballston, Pentagon City, and Clarendon. Same-day appointments are available — call us in the morning and we'll do our best to be there the same day.
