A Sub-Zero water dispenser that's slowed noticeably to little more than a weak trickle, or has stopped producing any water at all, is most often, in the majority of cases we handle, ultimately traced back to a filter issue rather than any kind of genuine mechanical component failure within the dispenser mechanism itself. Sub-Zero's water filters are specifically rated to handle a certain volume of water flow before they need replacement, and a filter that's meaningfully past its recommended replacement interval begins restricting water flow noticeably, sometimes to the point of nearly stopping flow entirely, well before most owners would think to suspect the filter as the actual culprit behind reduced dispenser performance.

Checking your unit's filter change indicator light, if your specific model includes one, along with confirming the actual date the filter was last replaced against the manufacturer's recommended replacement schedule, is always the fastest and most worthwhile first step to take before investigating anything more involved. This simple check takes only a moment and, if the filter genuinely is overdue, resolves the vast majority of reduced water flow complaints immediately upon replacement with a fresh filter.
Two things go wrong at this stage more often than the filter itself does.
It is not seated. A filter that has not turned fully home restricts flow exactly as a clogged one does, and it is easy to leave a quarter-turn short. Take it out and refit it deliberately before concluding the new filter is faulty.
There is air in the line. Changing a filter admits air, and until it is purged the dispenser spits, sputters and runs weakly — which reads as "the new filter made it worse". Run several quarts through and discard them until the flow is steady and clear. This is normal and expected, not a fault.
If a freshly replaced filter doesn't meaningfully restore normal water flow to the dispenser, the next place worth checking is the water supply line running behind the unit, specifically looking for any kinks or bends that might be restricting flow independent of the filter itself. This particular issue happens more often than many owners might initially expect, especially in situations where the refrigerator has recently been pulled away from the wall for cleaning purposes and the water line wasn't subsequently repositioned and fully straightened out again afterward when the unit was pushed back into its normal position against the wall.
Check the shut-off valve while you are back there, for the same reason. A valve nudged closed during cleaning, or left partly shut after plumbing work elsewhere, produces a weak dispenser and a slow ice maker together, and no amount of filter changing addresses it.
A frozen section of the water line represents another distinct possibility worth considering, particularly relevant if the specific connection point in question happens to run in close proximity to the freezer compartment, and if the insulation surrounding that particular section of line has shifted out of its proper position over time, exposing that segment of line to freezer temperatures it wasn't originally intended to be exposed to in that specific configuration.
The tell is intermittency with a pattern: flow that returns after the appliance has been left alone for some hours, then fails again with use. A blocked filter does not come and go; ice does.
A dispenser that produces an audible running or humming sound when activated, clearly indicating that some internal component is attempting to operate normally, but that ultimately produces no actual water output at all despite that sound — even when you've already confirmed both a genuinely clear, unobstructed water line and a properly replaced, fresh filter — points specifically toward the dispenser's solenoid valve as the likely failed component. This is the specific part responsible for physically opening to allow water through when the dispenser lever or button is activated, and it can fail as an independent, isolated mechanical or electrical issue completely separate from anything related to the broader water filtration and supply system, meaning it requires its own specific diagnosis and replacement rather than being resolved through any filter or line-related fix.
Silence when you press is a different signal again — nothing is being asked to open, which moves suspicion to the dispenser switch or its wiring rather than the valve.
Follow the interval in your manual rather than waiting for flow to drop, because by the time you notice a trickle the filter has been restricting for a while. Households on harder water reach that point sooner than the calendar suggests.
They exist and they are cheaper. They also vary in how precisely they seat, and a filter that does not seal correctly restricts flow or leaks internally — which is exactly the fault you are trying to fix. If flow problems started with a change of filter brand, that is worth considering.
That is a filter question rather than a flow one, and usually means it is overdue. A filter past its rated volume stops improving the water long before it starts restricting it.

If anything is leaking, yes. For a dispenser that simply will not dispense, there is no need — and leaving the supply on lets the technician test the system as it normally runs.
