Sub-Zero Freezer Not Freezing? Here's What's Wrong

June 12, 2025

A Sub-Zero freezer that isn't maintaining 0°F puts your frozen food at risk quickly. The causes range from simple maintenance issues to sealed system failures — here's how to identify which you're dealing with.

Dirty Condenser

Even freezer problems often trace back to the condenser. Sub-Zero's dual refrigeration system uses separate compressors and evaporators for the refrigerator and freezer sections, but both share the condenser's heat dissipation. A clogged condenser forces both systems to work harder. If you haven't cleaned the condenser in the past year and the vacuum condenser alert is on, start here before anything else.

Evaporator Fan Motor Failure

The evaporator fan circulates cold air through the freezer compartment. When this motor fails, the freezer loses its ability to distribute cold air evenly — temperatures rise even if the evaporator is still making cold air. You may notice the freezer is warmer near the top or sides while still partially cold near the evaporator. The fan motor can be confirmed as failed by listening for airflow inside the freezer when it's running.

Defrost System Failure

Ice buildup on the evaporator coils blocks airflow and prevents the freezer from cooling effectively. This is one of the most common causes of gradual freezer temperature rise. The defrost heater, thermostat, or timer may have failed, allowing ice to accumulate unchecked. Signs include: the freezer getting warmer over days or weeks, food near the back of the freezer showing ice crystal damage, or an unusual amount of frost visible when the freezer door is opened.

Door Seal Failure

A freezer door gasket that doesn't seal properly allows warm, humid air to enter continuously — making it nearly impossible for the freezer to maintain temperature and causing excessive frost buildup. Check the gasket with the paper test and inspect visually for tears or stiff sections.

Compressor or Sealed System Issues

The freezer compressor pumps refrigerant through the sealed system. When it begins to fail, the freezer gradually loses its ability to reach and maintain 0°F. The compressor may still run — even run constantly — without producing adequate cooling. Sealed system diagnosis requires specialized equipment and factory training.

Temperature Setting

Before calling for service, verify the freezer temperature is set to 0°F. Sub-Zero's default freezer setting is 0°F — if it was accidentally changed, food may not be fully frozen even though the unit is functioning correctly.

Getting It Fixed

If cleaning the condenser and checking the door seal and temperature settings doesn't restore freezing performance, call a certified Sub-Zero technician. We serve Arlington, Crystal City, Rosslyn, Ballston, Pentagon City, Clarendon, Fort Myer, and Potomac Yard with same-day appointments.
