Cove Dishwasher Smells Bad: What Is Actually Causing the Odor

September 19, 2026

A Cove that smells even straight after a completed cycle — rather than only after sitting closed for a few days — is holding food residue somewhere the wash does not flush. That is the whole diagnosis. Knowing where it collects is what separates fixing it from masking it.

The Filter, First and Almost Always

Cove uses a manual four-stage filter rather than a grinder, so nothing is chopped up and flushed away — it is caught and held until you remove it. Particles left sitting between cleanings decompose, and every subsequent cycle circulates water past that residue instead of removing it. That is precisely why the smell survives a wash.

Take the filter assembly out and scrub it under running water rather than rinsing it. This resolves most odour complaints on its own. The maintenance checklist covers the two parts that need cleaning, since there are effectively two and people usually clean one.

The same neglected filter is behind a Cove that will not drain, and the two complaints frequently arrive in the same call.

The Door Gasket

Second most common, and the one people wipe past. The folds in the seal around the door perimeter trap particles and grease during loading, out of sight of both the spray and a casual glance. Open the fold and wipe inside it with a damp cloth, not just the face of it. Every few weeks is enough to prevent buildup entirely.

While you are there, look at the seal itself. A gasket in poor condition is also how a Cove starts leaking at the door.

Spray Arms and Tub Walls

Spray arm holes trap small particles that decompose in place, which is the same blockage that causes spotting and film on the load. Remove the arms, check the holes are clear, and rinse them through.

Grease films on the tub walls contribute a fainter, more persistent background odour, and it is the usual explanation when the filter and gasket are both genuinely clean. Households that wash greasy cookware regularly build this up faster.

Clearing an Odour That Has Set In

Run an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaning product designed for the purpose, on the hottest cycle available. That reaches the corners and the seal fold that never get direct spray during a loaded cycle.

A note on the vinegar trick, which is widely recommended: acid is hard on rubber seals over repeated use, and if you have the DW2450WS its water softener is another reason to be cautious. A proper dishwasher cleaner does the same job without that trade-off. If you do use vinegar, treat it as occasional rather than routine.

Worth doing every few months as prevention rather than waiting for a smell. Odour that has had time to set into rubber and plastic is considerably harder to remove than odour that never developed.

If It Survives All of That

Filter scrubbed, gasket cleaned, arms clear, cleaning cycle run, and the smell is still there — then look for standing water. Water sitting in a partially blocked line or in the sump keeps producing odour no matter how clean everything else is, and it points back at the drainage side rather than at hygiene.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the filter need cleaning to stay ahead of this?

It depends entirely on how you load. Scraping without rinsing means more often; households that rinse plates need it less. Monthly is a reasonable starting point to adjust from.

Can I stop the smell by leaving the door open?

It helps and it treats nothing. Airing the tub slows what a residue source produces, but the source keeps producing. Use it alongside cleaning, not instead of it.

Is a rotten-egg smell different from a general staleness?

Usually yes — a sharper, sulphurous smell points at stagnant water rather than at surface residue, so check the drain side sooner.

Does running hotter cycles prevent odour?

It slows grease film building on the tub walls, which is one of the four sources. It does nothing for what is trapped in the filter.

Could the smell be coming from the sink drain rather than the dishwasher?

It genuinely can, particularly where the drain hose shares a disposal. If the smell is as strong at the sink with the dishwasher door shut, that is worth resolving first.
