Cove Dishwasher Not Filling With Water: What to Check First

A Cove dishwasher that appears to run through its normal cycle motions — making sounds, advancing through what seem like the expected stages, and eventually indicating a completed cycle — but doesn't actually appear to be filling with any meaningful amount of water is a particularly confusing symptom, since everything looks like it's operating normally from the outside except for the water itself never really showing up.

1. The Supply Valve

The water supply valve located behind the unit is always the right place to begin checking, and it's the fastest possible diagnostic step since it requires no tools and takes only a moment. Confirming this valve is fully open, rather than partially closed or accidentally shut off entirely, is especially important to check after any recent plumbing work has been done in the kitchen, even work that seems entirely unrelated to the dishwasher itself — valves near the dishwasher connection point are sometimes bumped or adjusted incidentally during unrelated under-sink work. A valve that's only partially open restricts water flow enough to prevent proper filling even though the dishwasher continues attempting to run its cycle as normal.

This is not just the easiest check, it is the manufacturer's own first instruction. Sub-Zero's troubleshooting for the no-water code opens with verifying the supply is turned on, then power-cycling at the breaker for 30 seconds. Do both before going further.

2. Read the Code Before Guessing

Cove reports fill problems specifically, which saves a great deal of guesswork — this symptom does not have to be diagnosed by feel:

  • 56 01 87 (FE1) — no water supply reaching the unit, flagged within the first three minutes. Points outward: the shut-off valve, the supply line, or the inlet valve.
  • 56 01 86 (FE1) — the flow meter is reading erratically during fill. Water is arriving, but not in a way the machine trusts.
  • 58 01 47 (PE1) — the pressure sensor is out of valid limits. This is the component that decides when the tub is full, and a faulty reading can stop a fill that is otherwise working perfectly.

3. The Inlet Valve

If the supply valve is confirmed to be fully open and water pressure to the rest of the kitchen seems normal, the issue likely lies with the inlet water valve located on the dishwasher itself, which is the component responsible for actually opening and allowing water to enter the tub when the control system calls for it during the fill stage of the cycle. This component can fail to open fully, which is a component-level failure distinct from any issue with your home's water supply. This kind of failure often develops gradually rather than happening all at once — you might notice reduced fill volume and shorter, less thorough-seeming wash cycles for some time before the valve eventually fails to open at all, producing a cycle with essentially no water fill whatsoever.

That gradual onset is the useful detail. If dishes have been coming out progressively less clean over recent months and the machine has now stopped filling entirely, those are the same fault at two stages, not two separate problems.

4. How a Cove Decides the Tub Is Full

It is worth being precise here, because the common advice for other dishwashers does not transfer. On a Cove, water level is monitored by a pressure sensor, not by a float bobbing up inside the tub. If that sensor reports incorrectly, the fill logic misbehaves — and it announces itself as code 58 01 47 rather than leaving you to guess.

There is also a base float switch, and the service manual does list checking that it is not stuck in the upward position. But it lives in the base of the machine, not in the tub, and its job is detecting water where water should not be. You cannot press it and watch it spring back the way you can on many other dishwashers; reaching it means pulling the unit.

What matters for a homeowner is what a stuck base float implies. It usually got there because water reached the base pan — which means a leak. If your machine has stopped filling and you have also seen dampness at the plinth or under the door, treat those as one problem: see what causes a Cove to leak at the door.

What can I actually check myself?

The shut-off valve behind or below the unit, whether the rest of the kitchen has normal pressure, whether the supply line is kinked, and a 30-second power cycle at the breaker. Beyond that — inlet valve, pressure sensor, base float — you are into parts that need the machine pulled out.

The machine fills a little but not enough. Same fault?

Usually the same components at an earlier stage. A partially open shut-off valve or a failing inlet valve both restrict rather than stop. Poor cleaning results often show up months before a fill failure does.

Could a blocked filter stop it filling?

Not directly — the filter sits on the drain side. But a machine that cannot drain cannot start a clean fill either, and the two get confused. If there is standing water in the tub, that is a drain problem, not a fill one.

Should I keep running cycles to see if it fixes itself?

No. If the inlet valve is not opening, repeated cycles achieve nothing. If the pressure sensor is misreading, you risk the opposite failure — a machine that does not know when to stop filling is a worse problem than one that will not start.

Is a fill problem an expensive repair?

It is one of the cheaper ones when it is the valve or the sensor: both are discrete parts rather than sealed-system work. The costly outcome is water damage from ignoring a stuck base float, because that float is reporting a leak somebody has not found yet.
