A door that refuses to latch properly is one of the more common underlying reasons behind a Cove dishwasher that appears completely unresponsive when you try to start it, since virtually all modern dishwashers, Cove included, are built with a safety interlock system that simply won't permit any cycle to begin without a confirmed, fully secured locked door state. If you've been troubleshooting an unresponsive unit and haven't specifically checked the latch mechanism itself, this is worth focused attention.
The first thing worth checking is whether anything is physically obstructing the door from swinging all the way closed and seating properly against the latch mechanism. This sounds obvious, but it's genuinely easy to miss — a rack rail that's slightly out of its intended track position, or an item loaded slightly too tall or positioned too far forward in either rack, can prevent full door closure in a way that's not always immediately obvious just by looking at the door from the front. The door can appear closed to a casual glance while actually being held open by just a small fraction of an inch, which is more than enough to prevent the latch from properly engaging.
Quickest way to settle it: empty the machine completely and close the door. If it latches on an empty tub, the mechanism is fine and you have a loading problem.
If a careful check reveals nothing obstructing the door and it still won't latch despite closing all the way, the latch mechanism itself may have become misaligned. This kind of gradual misalignment can develop over years of regular use, as door hinges slowly settle and shift their position ever so slightly with each open-and-close cycle, eventually throwing off the precise alignment needed between the door and the latch receiver for a clean, secure engagement. This tends to be a gradual process rather than a sudden change, which is why it's easy to not notice happening until the door reaches a point where it simply won't catch anymore.
Cove's door tension is not fixed — the service manual specifies setting it according to the Installation Guide once the door adjuster block is fitted. On a panel-ready unit that setting has to account for the weight of your cabinetry panel, and a solid timber front and a lightweight one are not the same load.
Two things follow. If the panel was ever changed, or the door was rehung during kitchen work, tension set for the old weight leaves the door sitting slightly low — exactly the drift described above, arriving in weeks instead of years. And a door that has always been reluctant since installation was probably never set correctly, which is an adjustment rather than a worn part.
A distinctly different symptom worth separating out is a latch that does engage initially — you hear or feel it catch — but then pops back open again shortly afterward, either immediately or partway through what should have been a running cycle. This particular pattern points more specifically toward a worn strike plate or a weakened latch spring, components that have lost their mechanical integrity over time, rather than a general alignment issue. The latch mechanism successfully makes initial contact, but doesn't have enough remaining mechanical strength or the correct positioning to hold that engagement securely under normal vibration and movement during operation.
When it pops open matters. Immediately, on a still machine, is a mechanical problem — spring or strike plate. Partway through a running cycle, once the pump is moving water and the machine is vibrating, suggests a latch holding on the last of its travel: enough to catch, not enough to survive the wash.
Whichever specific symptom you're experiencing, forcing a door that won't latch by pushing harder or repeatedly slamming it shut carries real risk of causing further damage to an already-compromised mechanism, potentially turning a relatively simple alignment adjustment into a full latch assembly replacement. If a careful visual check doesn't reveal an obvious obstruction, and the door still won't latch reliably after confirming nothing is in the way, this is a situation worth having a technician properly assess rather than continuing to force the issue through repeated attempts.
Three things get mistaken for a latch fault, and each has a different answer:
It is a specified setting rather than a knob to turn by feel — the manual ties it to the Installation Guide for your configuration. Guessing tends to trade one problem for another: a door that latches but drops open when unlatched, or one that needs a shove to close.
Because door tension is set for the panel weight. A heavier or lighter front changes the load the door was balanced for, and the tension has to be reset. This is one of the more common causes on panel-ready units and one of the easier to put right.
The interlock will not let it run unlatched, so it is not a flooding risk. The cost is different: every forced attempt works a mechanism that is already worn, and an adjustment becomes a replacement.
If you can hear and feel it catch, the latch is fine and the switch that confirms it is not. Same symptom, different part — and worth saying on the phone, because it changes what the technician brings.
Not reliably — a machine that will not confirm a closed door often just does nothing, which is why this fault gets mistaken for a dead control board. If a code is showing, it is worth checking against the code table, since that points somewhere more specific.
