A bake element genuinely rarely fails completely and suddenly without any prior warning signs at all — in the great majority of cases, most bake elements give off subtle but noticeable indications of developing trouble for anywhere from several days up to several weeks before they ultimately reach the point of total, complete failure. Learning to recognize these earlier warning signs gives you the meaningful advantage of being able to schedule a replacement proactively, on your own timeline and convenience, rather than being caught completely off guard by a suddenly non-functional oven right when you need it most.
Uneven glow along the element's visible length, showing noticeably darker or dimmer sections interspersed with normally-glowing bright orange-red sections, rather than displaying the uniform, consistent red-orange color you'd expect to see across the element's entire length during operation, represents one of the earliest and most visually apparent indicators available of developing internal wire degradation happening somewhere within the element itself. This kind of visual inspection is genuinely something any owner can perform themselves simply by looking through the oven's window or briefly opening the door during preheating, without needing any special tools or technical expertise to recognize this particular warning sign.
Look through the glass rather than opening the door, and do not put a hand anywhere near it. An element at working temperature does not need to be touched to burn, and the point of this check is to look.
Worth saying plainly, because it stops the advice above being useful for a lot of people: many built-in ovens conceal the bake element beneath the oven floor rather than leaving it exposed in the cavity. If yours has a smooth floor with no visible element, there is nothing to inspect and the visual check does not apply to you.
That is not a dead end — it just means judging by behaviour instead, which the rest of this article covers. A concealed element declines in exactly the same way; it simply does it out of sight.
Longer preheat times developing gradually, combined with food that consistently seems to brown less thoroughly on its bottom surface specifically, even when you've confirmed correct rack positioning that should normally produce proper bottom browning, points toward an element that's technically still functioning and producing heat, but at a genuinely reduced output level compared to its original full rated capacity, despite still appearing intact and undamaged from a purely visual standpoint. This particular pattern of gradual performance decline is meaningfully different from a sudden, complete failure, which would instead typically present through a clearly visible physical split running along the element, a blistered section of the element's surface, or an obvious burn mark somewhere along its length.

Bake and broil use separate elements on their own circuits, and that gives you a free comparison. If broiling still works normally and browns strongly while baking has gone weak and slow, the fault is confined to the bake side — which rules out the supply, the control board and the door seal in one observation, since all three would affect both.

Weak and slow is something to schedule around. An element that trips the breaker is not.
When an element finally splits, it can arc and short rather than simply going open circuit, and a breaker tripping when the oven reaches temperature is that happening. Leave the breaker off and stop using the oven until it has been looked at — repeatedly resetting it means repeatedly re-energising a shorted element inside a metal cabinet.
Catching these various early warning signs before the element progresses to total, complete failure carries genuine practical value beyond just avoiding inconvenience — it means you can proactively schedule a replacement appointment on a timeline that works well with your own schedule, rather than suddenly discovering a completely dead, non-functional oven at an inconvenient moment, such as right before hosting an important dinner gathering, preparing for a holiday meal, or during any other time when having a fully working oven matters considerably to your immediate plans.
Given how meaningful this distinction can be, it's genuinely worth developing a habit of periodically doing a quick check anytime you happen to notice that preheat times seem to be gradually creeping up compared to what you remember from when the oven was newer, or if baking results seem to be becoming somewhat less consistent than they used to be across similar dishes prepared the same way you always have.
It is one of the cheaper parts in an oven and among the more accessible — a discrete component rather than sealed or control-side work. That is worth knowing before deciding to live with a declining one.
If it is simply slow and weak, yes, allowing extra time. Stop if you can see a split, a blister or a burn mark, and stop immediately if it trips the breaker.

Not routinely. They age at different rates because they are used differently, and a healthy broil element replaced for tidiness is money spent on nothing. Replace what has failed.
Only through undercooking. An oven running below its set point cooks more slowly than the recipe assumes, which matters for meat rather than cakes. An oven thermometer removes the guesswork while you wait for the repair.
