And, of course, it can trigger due to a genuine underlying cooling system problem that's actually causing real, sustained temperature drift independent of any of these more benign, temporary explanations.
The timing usually tells you which. An alert waiting for you in the morning after a storm is almost certainly the outage. One that appears on an ordinary day when nobody has been in and out of the fridge is the one worth taking seriously.
The first and most useful step when you notice a flashing display is simply comparing actual internal temperature, measured with an independent thermometer placed inside the unit, against what the display itself is currently showing. This comparison matters because a sensor fault within the unit can occasionally trigger a false alarm — the display flashes and reports an alert condition even though actual internal temperature is completely normal and within safe range, simply because the sensor responsible for measuring and reporting that temperature isn't functioning accurately itself.
Do it properly or the reading misleads you. Put the thermometer in the middle of the cabinet rather than in a door shelf, leave it several hours rather than several minutes, and do not run the test straight after a grocery load — a fridge full of room-temperature shopping is genuinely warm for a while, and that is the appliance working rather than failing.
If an independent thermometer confirms that actual temperatures are indeed normal despite the flashing display, the alert can typically be cleared directly through the unit's control panel, following the specific process outlined in your model's manual. Once cleared, it generally won't return unless the underlying triggering condition happens to repeat itself again in the future.
Note what that means, though. An alert that clears and stays away was reporting a past event, usually the outage or the open door. An alert that clears and comes back within a day or two while the thermometer still reads normal is pointing at the sensor itself, and that is a repair rather than a nuisance.
If, on the other hand, actual measured temperatures genuinely are elevated or otherwise off from the expected set point, it's worth treating that flashing display as a useful early warning signal rather than dismissing it as a mere nuisance to be cleared and forgotten. Catching a developing compressor issue, a failing air damper, or some other cooling system problem early — right when the display first alerts you to it — gives you the opportunity to address the underlying cause before it progresses to the point of actual food loss from sustained warm temperatures, which represents a considerably worse outcome than simply scheduling a timely repair visit.

A flashing display that appears alongside any noticeably different compressor sounds — whether that's louder operation than usual, more frequent cycling on and off throughout the day, or, more concerning still, complete silence where you'd normally expect to hear at least periodic compressor activity — should be treated as a combination warranting more urgent attention, and it's worth prioritizing a same-week diagnostic assessment rather than simply monitoring the situation and hoping it resolves on its own over time.
If a thermometer confirms the temperature is fine, yes — it was reporting something that has passed. If you have not checked, clearing it only removes the message, not the condition, and you lose the early warning the alert exists to give.
That depends on how long and how warm, not on the alarm itself. Food held above 40°F for more than two hours is the usual line for perishables. The alarm tells you something drifted; it does not tell you for how long, so judge the food on its own.
